From Goobarragandra to Long Plain

Exploration, gold mining, grazing, eucalyptus oil distillation, timber milling and recreation in the northern Snowy Mountains 1824-1969

by David Lindley

This book documents 145 years of European activity in the northern Snowy Mountains.

It is mostly wilderness, part of a network of management units designated throughout the Kosciuszko National Park by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Despite the rugged landscapes of the Bogong Peaks and Goobarragandra wilderness and the perceived limited human impacts, this book describes a rich history of hardship and isolation experienced by prospectors and miners, graziers and drovers, timber getters and sawmillers, and eucalyptus oil distillers.

It serves to permanently record under one cover the contributions of many pioneers whose names have all but been lost with time. It is hoped my book will be the stepping-stone for future historical research of this much-forgotten and unique wilderness.
